The Entry Point That’s Lower Than Most People Think

PC gaming has a reputation for high cost that’s partly deserved (the most capable PC gaming hardware is genuinely expensive) and partly a product of enthusiast-community focus on top-tier hardware that doesn’t represent what’s necessary for an enjoyable gaming experience at mainstream price points. A PC gaming setup in 2026 that plays the vast majority of current games at excellent visual quality doesn’t require a $3,000 investment — it requires sensible prioritisation and realistic expectations about where component budget produces the most gaming experience improvement.

The framework for building a gaming PC at any budget: GPU is the primary determinant of gaming performance and deserves the largest share of the component budget. CPU matters but is the bottleneck in fewer games than GPU. RAM at the appropriate speed and quantity is inexpensive relative to its importance. Storage speed makes loading times dramatically shorter. Display quality determines what you can see; investing in the GPU while using an old 1080p 60Hz display underutilises the GPU’s capability.

GPU: The Decision That Determines Everything

The GPU (graphics card) is the most important component for gaming performance and the decision around which the rest of the build should be organised. The GPU budget should generally be 30-40% of the total system cost, higher if gaming is the exclusive use and the rest of the system is supporting rather than central.

In 2026, the GPU landscape includes strong options from Nvidia (RTX 4060, 4070, 4080, and successor RTX 50-series), AMD (RX 7600, 7700, 7800 XT, 7900 series and successors), and Intel (Arc B580 and successors). At the $250-400 range, AMD’s RX 7700 and 7800 XT and Nvidia’s RTX 4060 Ti provide excellent 1080p and strong 1440p gaming. At $400-600, 1440p gaming at high settings is comfortably achievable from all three manufacturers. Above $600, diminishing returns set in for gaming specifically, though the gains matter more for 4K gaming and ray tracing-intensive use.

CPU and RAM: Supporting the GPU Without Bottlenecking

The CPU bottleneck in gaming — where the CPU limits performance rather than the GPU — is most common in games with complex simulation, large numbers of entities, or specific CPU-intensive engines. For most games, a mid-range CPU (AMD Ryzen 5 7600, Intel Core i5-13400 or successors) provides adequate performance that the GPU will reach its limits before the CPU does. Spending significantly more on CPU than necessary for the target GPU tier diverts budget from where it produces more gaming benefit.

RAM at 16 GB is the current gaming minimum; 32 GB is increasingly the recommended baseline as games’ RAM requirements grow. DDR5 provides performance advantages over DDR4 in CPU-intensive gaming workloads but less visible advantage in GPU-bound gaming. For budget builds on platforms that support both DDR4 and DDR5, DDR4 at the appropriate speed provides nearly equivalent gaming performance at lower cost.

Display: Where the Investment Becomes Visible

A gaming display decision has three key parameters: resolution (1080p, 1440p, 4K), refresh rate (60Hz, 144Hz, 165Hz, 240Hz+), and panel type (IPS for colour quality and viewing angles, TN for maximum refresh rate response time, VA for contrast). The combination that provides the most gaming experience improvement for the cost: 1440p at 144Hz+ on an IPS panel.

Refresh rate matters significantly for fast-paced gaming: the difference between 60Hz and 144Hz is dramatically visible in first-person shooters, racing games, and any game where rapid movement is central. The difference between 144Hz and 240Hz is visible but less dramatic and requires a GPU powerful enough to consistently render at 240 frames per second. For most gamers, 144-165Hz at 1440p on a quality IPS panel is the display tier that maximises the gaming experience per dollar of display investment.

Peripherals: The Budget That’s Easy to Underestimate

A gaming PC build budget that doesn’t account for peripherals is incomplete: keyboard, mouse, headset, and mousepad together cost $100-400 for quality gaming-appropriate options and $50-150 for adequate budget options. These costs are fixed regardless of PC tier, which means they represent a larger share of the total budget for budget builds and a smaller share for premium ones.

The peripherals with the most gaming impact per dollar: a gaming mouse with appropriate sensor accuracy and weight for your grip style (DPI is less important than sensor consistency and build quality), and a headset with adequate virtual surround and microphone quality for the games you play. Mechanical keyboards provide a better gaming experience than membrane alternatives but at higher cost — the Keychron or budget mechanical options covered in Vol. 2 are appropriate here. An extended mousepad that allows low-sensitivity mouse movement without running off the edge is inexpensive and high-impact for first-person shooter games.
