The storage pressure that affects performance is the available storage relative to total capacity — not the absolute amount consumed. A 128 GB phone with 120 GB used is more affected by storage pressure than a 64 GB phone with 40 GB used, even though the former has more absolute free space. Most recommendations suggest maintaining at least 10-15% free storage; below this threshold, storage management operations slow down noticeably on both platforms.

Finding What’s Actually Using Your Storage

Before deleting anything, understand what’s consuming storage. On iOS: Settings > General > iPhone Storage shows storage breakdown by category (Apps, Photos, iOS, System Data) and individual app storage usage, with recommendations for freeing space. On Android: Settings > Storage shows the breakdown, with paths to large files and unused apps. The breakdown often reveals surprises: the messaging app with years of media attachments consuming 15 GB, the game downloaded once and never played consuming 8 GB, or ‘System Data’ or ‘Other’ that has grown to an unexpected size.

The ‘Other’ or ‘System Data’ category on iOS can grow very large due to accumulated offline caches from streaming apps, browser caches, and Safari offline reading lists. The most reliable way to reduce iOS System Data that doesn’t respond to individual app cache clearing: a backup and restore cycle (connect to Mac/PC, back up, restore from backup) clears accumulated system caches that individual cache clearing doesn’t reach.

Photos and Videos: The Largest Storage Consumer

Photos and videos are the largest storage consumer on most personal smartphones. The iPhone HDR video that’s 500 MB per minute and the 4K ProRes video on Pro models that’s several gigabytes per minute fill storage faster than any other source. The practical options for managing this: iCloud Photos or Google Photos (which optionally store full-resolution originals in the cloud and keep device-optimised versions on the phone), regular transfer to a computer or external drive, or reduced video quality settings for everyday recording.

The iCloud Photos optimise storage option (Settings > Photos > Optimise iPhone Storage on iOS) keeps small, device-optimised versions of photos on the phone while storing the full-resolution originals in iCloud. This can reduce photo library storage from 40 GB to 5 GB while keeping all photos accessible when connected to the internet. Google Photos’ free storage tier was discontinued in 2021; current Google Photos storage counts against Google One quota ($2.99/month for 100 GB).

App and Cache Management

App caches — temporary files stored by apps to speed up repeated operations — are the storage category that most benefits from periodic clearing without permanent data loss. On Android, app caches can be cleared individually (Settings > Apps > [App Name] > Storage > Clear Cache) or through cleaning tools. On iOS, individual app caches can be cleared by offloading the app (Settings > General > iPhone Storage > [App] > Offload App, then reinstall) — offloading removes the app but keeps its data, effectively clearing the cache while preserving the user’s account and settings within the app.

Streaming app offline content is the cache category that most surprisingly consumes large storage: Spotify’s offline playlists, Netflix’s downloaded shows, and YouTube’s offline videos collectively take significant storage that’s invisible until the storage audit reveals it. Reviewing and reducing offline content in each streaming app you use is often the fastest way to recover meaningful storage.

When Storage Management Isn’t Enough

Some storage situations aren’t solvable through management: a phone with 64 GB total storage in a household that takes many photos and videos with children, a heavy gamer with large game installs, or a professional who stores work files locally. When the storage management has been done and the available space still isn’t adequate for the use case, the options are moving to cloud storage for more content categories (reducing what must be stored locally), deleting content that isn’t actually needed, or factoring storage capacity more heavily into the next phone purchase decision.

The phone purchase advice that most prevents storage management headaches: buy more storage than you think you need. The marginal cost of doubling storage at purchase ($50-100 on most flagship models) is significantly less than the ongoing management effort of a phone that’s always near capacity. ‘I’ll manage with 128 GB’ often turns into managing storage every few months; ‘256 GB is more than I need right now’ often turns into not needing to think about storage for the phone’s entire service life.
